Belonging to the Ericaceae family, Gaultheria fragrantissima, also known as fragrant wintergreen, is a small evergreen shrub with oval, glossy leaves.

It produces bell-shaped white or pink flowers, which appear in drooping clusters. The fruits are red, fleshy berries. It is mainly found in the Himalayan regions, India, Nepal and China.

The essential oil of Gaultheria fragrantissima is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of the shrub. It comes in the form of a clear liquid ranging from colorless to pale yellow. The aroma of this essential oil is characteristic, both sweet and fresh, with minty and slightly woody notes.
