Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, Lavandula angustifolia P. Miller, also known as true lavender, fine lavender or common lavender, is a perennial subshrub with narrow, linear leaves.
It produces blue-violet to pale blue flowers, clustered in terminal spikes on long stems. Lavandula angustifolia is mainly cultivated in Mediterranean regions, particularly in France, Spain, Italy and Bulgaria.
Lavandula angustifolia essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of freshly harvested flowers. It appears as a clear liquid with a color ranging from colorless to pale yellow. The aroma of this essential oil is gentle, floral and herbaceous, with slightly balsamic notes.
