What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a molecule belonging to the flavonoid family. Flavonoids are recognized as powerful antioxidants. This means that flavonoids have the power to fight free radicals.

There are over 4,000 different flavonoids worldwide. Quercetin belongs to the group of flavonoids known as "flavonols". Flavonoids were discovered in 1937. Since then, they have been used in the formulation of numerous products, including dietary supplements.

Quercetin has not been left out of the equation, since it features on the ingredient list of a number of nutritional supplements. Also known as quercetol, quercetin can be found in its pure state. In this case, it is in powder form. It can take on a yellow hue. It has a bitter taste.

Quercetin is found in a variety of food sources. It is found in many vegetables and fruits. Flavonoids are pigments that give plants their color.

Some foods are more popular for their high quercetol content than others. These include lovage and capers.

Experts also attribute an anti-inflammatory action to quercetin. This is made possible by its antioxidant properties. For example, it is effective in cases of prostate inflammation. It reduces the symptoms of prostatitis.

Other health benefits

Quercetin improves heart and cardiovascular health. It also boosts the immune system.

This antioxidant counteracts premature ageing of the body's cells, thus combating cellular aging. It can be combined with vitamin C for a more remarkable action.
