Nestled on the right bank of the Rhône valley, in Monteiller, the L'Essencier distillery embodies tradition and innovation in the heart of the Valais mountains. From its modest beginnings as a family farm in 1953, L'Essencier has evolved and adapted to become a pioneer in the production of high-quality essential oils, hydrolats and vegetable oils, always respecting local values and excellence.

A Commitment to Local and Organic

The history of L'Essencier is deeply rooted in the land of the Mayor family. Since Jean-Michel introduced the first organic cultivation of medicinal plants in 1997, in collaboration with the Valplantes Cooperative, the farm has always favored growing methods that respect the environment and are adapted to the region's unique mid-mountain conditions. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, on an ancient glacial moraine, the plants benefit from a contrasting but particularly sunny climate, conducive to the growth of aromatic plants such as thyme, oregano, savory and sage, as well as wild species such as yarrow, St John's wort and arnica.

All L'Essencier crops are certified by BIO Suisse, guaranteeing sustainable farming practices that respect the local ecosystem. L'Essencier also works in close collaboration with local forestry authorities to ensure the sustainable harvesting of native softwoods, thus creating a virtuous cycle in which every resource is put to good use.

Distillation at the cutting edge of ecology

The L'Essencier distillery, inaugurated in 2015, is an example of sustainable, environmentally-friendly construction. Equipped with a modern still using renewable energies such as solar thermal panels and chipped wood, the distillery applies a gentle water-bath distillation process. This process, which preserves the active principles of the plants, uses only steam to extract the aromatic compounds, thus ensuring the quality and purity of the essential oils and hydrolats produced.

In this meticulous process, fresh plants are carefully placed in a stainless steel vat, without direct contact with boiling water. Steam passes through the plants, carrying with it the volatile active ingredients, which are then condensed and separated in an essencier, a traditional device where the essential oil separates naturally from the hydrolat. This process, which requires careful monitoring of temperatures and pressures, guarantees products of exceptional quality, rich in natural active ingredients.
