Magnesium malate is absorbed in the small intestine through active transport and passive diffusion, with good digestive tolerance linked to the organic nature of the salt. The bond with malic acid preserves the integrity of the magnesium all the way to the absorption site, reducing ionic competition with other minerals. Once dissociated, malic acid enters the Krebs cycle directly as a substrate for fumarase.
