Belonging to the Cupressaceae family, evergreen cypress is a tree with a slender, long, narrow crown. It grows wild or in cultivation around the Mediterranean basin, notably in Spain, southern France and North Africa.
This evergreen tree, 10 to 30 meters tall, has gray-brown bark and tightly-packed twigs bearing small, triangular leaves. The female and male flowers (in March-April in France) are grouped separately and produce globose fruiting cones 2 to 3 cm long, with six to twelve green scales that turn brown when ripe.
The essential oil obtained from the twigs is a clear, limpid liquid, ranging from colorless to pale orange-yellow. It gives off a powerful turpentine aroma, with woody and amber notes.
