A spore-forming, Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium naturally found in the human gut microbiome. Clostridium butyricum is one of the main butyrate-producing bacteria in the intestinal ecosystem.
Clostridium butyricum ferments dietary fiber to produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that nourishes the epithelial cells of the colon. It also regulates the Th1/Th2/Th17 balance of T lymphocytes, thus modulating the intestinal immune response, particularly in cases of chronic inflammation.
